Regional Centers

Regional Centers are a part of the Elixir for Schools project. The Foundation launched 21 Centers throughout the Czech Republic for Physics teachers who are seeking new methods of making class instruction more attractive and of introducing Physics as an interesting, practical and entertaining subject to their pupils. In these Centers, teachers gain inspiration, ideas for new experiments and information on innovations in Physics, provided in an easily accessible manner.

There are monthly afternoon meetings in each Center. Attendance is free and completely voluntary. The program is adapted to attendees' needs – new experiments and teaching methods are tried out, frequent problems that pupils have with a certain topic are discussed, with field trips arranged to places not usually accessible to visitors. The meetings are always led by an experienced teacher.

Teaching aids worth approximately CZK 45 000 are available in each Center. Among the teaching aids are, for example, measuring probes, USB microscopes and model steam engines – teachers can borrow all these teaching aids free of charge for their classes. The full list of teaching aids can be found here; instructions for experiments and their descriptions can be found here; and here are some suggestions for experiments with a USB microscope. The Regional Centers project introduces a unique approach to supporting motivated teachers, with all activities originating on a voluntary basis and from the bottom up. The Centers are becoming places for establishing communities of teachers who want to teach in a way that makes instruction fun for their pupils and themselves. The project has gained significant popularity within the first year of its existence – over 400 different teachers have already attended the meetings and the regular monthly attendance is about 200 teachers.
